Dester designed this flag pole pedestal, so we could lower the pole and fix anything at the top with the pulley system if needed. When I hired Dester, I didn't know he was a genius.....................he designed the wheels on the lunar module that went to the moon in the early 70's. So, he was hired under the Experienced Works program, so he was "extra help" and the Center always needed to be cleaned up. Being in his 70's, I hoped he could be my maintenance man/janitor and help keep the floors swept and thereby safer. In the interview is bet I said, "Dester, I need someone who can sweep" at least 3-4 times. Ole Floyd Roberts, he was a genius also..........could make anything in his shop, metal or wood.........was around and Dester looked at me and said, "Don't you have one of those sucker uppers? Next time a riding lawn mower comes in, set it a side and Floyd and me will make a sweeper for you." The very next day, Dester came in with a 3 dimensional drawing of a converted lawn mower, now a riding sweeper. As he showed his design to me, he said, "I rounded the sweeper so you can get into the corners." We laughed and laughed. Dester did soooooo many things for me at the Recycling Center......things that no one else knew how to fix, or wouldn't take the time to get it right. He worked with us for at least 3 years, maybe as many as 5 years. He told me incredible stories I wished I had recorded........... Great memories of a great man............
